Dominica has taken the full hit of Cat 5 hurricane Maria. There is very little news coming through at the moment. I tried to contact my friends there with no success. I suspect all networks are down. I can only hope they are ok.
Last night Dominica’s president reported: “So far the winds have swept away the roofs of almost every person I have spoken to or otherwise made contact with. […] We will need help, my friend, we will need help of all kinds.”
Dominica is probably the least prepared of all the Caribbean islands due to its lack of economical resources. The people I have met during the month I spent there, kind, warm, generous people, live in simple villages, in houses that could never withstand a normal hurricane, let alone a category 5.
I am afraid there won’t be much left of the country.
It is devastating.
My heart has sunk.
